Danielle Lasday

I am a rising senior at Penn State - University Park majoring in Hospitality Management. I am very involved in THON, Penn State's student run 46 hour dance marathon for pediatric cancer. Every year I have joined different committees and organizations that either help out during THON or contribute to raising money. I am also a sister of Alpha Delta Pi sorority, I joined my sophomore year. I am currently the Public Relations director for the Penn State chapter of HSMAI (Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International). I have also been a photographer for an on campus life and style magazine VALLEY and a member. Being involved is very important!

Why Penn State University?

What do you love about your school?

I love how much of a family Penn State is, everyone has the "We Are" mentality. There is a place for everyone at Penn State and you will find it! The amount of ways to get involved on campus and meet people are endless. It is also so easy to meet people freshman year too because you all live in the same area and meet people in the quad or in the freshman commons. There are also so many freshman programs the first few weeks of school to help people to get to know each other.

Why did you choose your school when you were a senior in high school? Walk us through that process.

I come from a Penn State family and have wanted to go to PSU since I was little. I visited with two of my friends sophomore year of high school on a rainy disgusting day and loved it. I knew that was the school for me because if I loved it when it was a rainy gross day outside, I was going to love it when it was beautiful and sunny. I also loved the college town and that it was so secluded.

What has been your favorite class so far? Tell us about it!

My favorite class I have taken was a social media marketing class. We had the opportunity the go to a business downtown and create a social media plan for the semester and present it to the business owners for our final project. I liked how it was a more interactive class and we got real life experience.

What fun traditions do you like to partake in at your school?

My favorite tradition is THON. THON is a student run 46 hour, no sitting, no sleeping, dance marathon raising money for childhood cancer. Every club, sorority, fraternity, and sports team is involved in raising money and putting THON on. A really cool thing about our THON is that every organization that is involved is connected with a family who is or has been impacted by childhood cancer. So not only are we raising money through dancing, but we are also making connections with families.

Tell us about Jewish life on campus. How have you been able to engage with this aspect of your identity while at school?

Penn State has a very large jewish population, so there are a lot of ways to get involved. I was not very involved until I met a bunch of Jewish girls in my sorority and we have gotten involved in a good portion of Jewish life. I did not join a Jewish sorority, but there are a large group of Jews in the one I joined. There are opportunities to go on Birthright, Onward, and other trips. Also there are a lot of Jewish studies classes available. I took one my sophomore year.

Share your favorite road trip song that we can add to our college road trip playlist!
